Six Op FM, DX7 Style Free VST Synth
If you have a desire to play around with some 1980's style 6 Operator FM synthesis, then the Yamaha DX7 is the hardware you're looking for. You could actually go with the original brown DX7 or the black II, IID or IIFD, or the modules like the TX7 or TX802 or even the eight module beast of the TX816 (basically six DX7s in one large rack module). Aside from the TX816, any of this Yamaha FM hardware can be had for fairly little cash these days. You can usually pickup an original brown DX7 for under $100 USD on eBay these days. That being said, some folks don't have the physical space or the extra $100 to go that route. If that describes you, then you are looking for a free synth vst. Luck for you, all is not lost: Enter Hexter, a 6 OP FM DX7 emulation soft synth created by Sean Bolton. Generally, Hexter is backwards compatible with all DX7 patches (of which an almost incomprehensible number of are floating around the Internet).

Why Hexter as Opposed to Native Instruments FM or Some Other VST
Sure you could go with Native Instruments FM7 or FM8 or FM49 when that comes out, but that's overkill for most uses and it requires the use of either Windows or Mac, i'm a Slackware Linux man, so naturally that poses an issue for me. Besides, Hexter has one advantage that the Native Instruments plugs will never have, Hexter is 100% legally free. While i will never part with my TX816 or DX7, i keep Hexter installed on my machine at all times. It's just too handy and in general, to cool a piece of software to ignore.
